| A great outcome of this fellowship for me is working with Gail Brager. She is regarded as one of the foremost thinkers in my field of research, thermal comfort. I’ve interacted with her at various levels and had the opportunity to discuss on several issues related to life and research. In her class on Natural Ventilation that I attended for a semester, I closely observed her innovative and engaging methods of pedagogy. My learning directly from Gail is an important intangible personal achievement. I honed my technical writing/ interpretation skills through many of those one-one discussions. A tangible outcome however is our joint publications in a top of the order journal and a similar conference. We published for the first time, on the thermal comfort and adaptation of occupants in offices in India. Although not part of my original research plan, something equally important laid in waiting for me at Berkeley. We used the state of the art facilities at CBE, in research themes that have not been explored earlier, thanks to the ever friendly and inviting CBE team, especially Ed, Hui, Fred, Tom and Stefano. Together with a Korean researcher Juyoun Lee of LG Electronics, Seoul, I could therefore make an important fundamental research contribution. We studied the clothing insulation of Indian sari under various drapes. We tested as many as 66 Indian ensembles on a Danish Thermal manikin in a climate chamber. |
